Home improvements! Whilst it’s always nice to see the results of any improvements, it’s satisfying to know that you will see a return on your investment when it comes to selling your home.
We all know the danger of over-capitalising on improvements, but what if an improvement is marketed to save you money? One improvement that has gained popularity is spray foam insulation. To save money on energy costs and improve green credentials for a property, it seems a simple solution. But, is it that straight-forward?
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has recently issued guidance to help homeowners in the decision to use spray foam. Their introductory article makes this comment: “This popular form of insulation, which has been widely used for several decades, can all too often be marketed as an easy and simplistic fix, when in fact the installation of spray foam should really be seen as a significant and fundamental alteration to a home which needs careful consideration and planning.”
In some cases, the installation of spray foam has resulted in properties being rendered unmortgageable until remedial works have taken place. To see why or find out more, please see the RICS article (here) or contact us here.
